Pompeii curiosities of a great civilization

Today I bring you to the excavations of Pompeii near Naples. Pompeii’s civilization existed over 2000 years ago, whose life has stopped in 79 AD, and so evolved as to have been a precursor of many inventions and habits in modern life. Arrived early in the morning and with the sun at the peak, here I am walking through the districts and squares. I love to explore historical places where history is engraved on stones, painted walls, architraves, mosaics and everything that belongs to another era. Thanks to the opportunity to visit some museums, I began my exploration of Pompeii, whose excavations are located in Campania. A new world has opened up for me, rich in heterogeneity, beauty and very modern in many ways.

More than 870 little shops

Would you believe there were more shops than houses? Not everyone knows that there were more shops, shops than houses. The public businesses was very important there were 870 little shops in the same time were been around 800 houses.  The Pompeians had have been an intense public life, including shopping at the market an assignment which was only attended by the husband accompanied by servants.

Ash lapilli beds, pyroclastic deposits and lava flows

The burial of 6 meters of lapilli and ash was able to preserve its integrity. many houses and objects of common use were sealed and stopped by time and wear. Cementing around the bodies invested, they have retained the impression that you can see the attitudes assumed as a result of short but atrocious agonies.
Initially Pompeii was inhabited only in the area where the hole is currently located, and subsequently extended assuming the plant to rectangular blocks (insulae) still visible. Surrounded by a portico and dominated by the temple of Jupiter, it forms the heart of the city, its political, administrative and commercial center.

Pedestrian Crossing

As you can see, the city streets had very high sidewalks and to cross them there were big boulders placed, at regular intervals, in the middle they could pass the wheels of the wagons. The distance from one wheel to another determined the width of the rails of the first circumvesuviana in Naples. In the evening, the servants had the task of opening the aqueduct and running water through the streets, so that they could be washed with excrement that accumulated during the day. Among the pebbles of the road stood out small white stones that lit up faintly in the moonlight to allow the cleaning work.

City Terms

The step and a platform are visible where they sat around and spent time chatting. There were male and female baths. Public baths: those of the “Forum” and those “Stabiane”, which can be visited only in the male section and characterized by the alternation of environments with gradually increasing temperature (frigidarium, tepidarium and calidarium).
