July 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman, director of such classics as The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, the Bergman’s centenary is being marked with events, films and TV dramas.
To celebrate Bergman’s centenary,in Rome at Palazzo delle Esposizioni start a special care project to celebrate Bergman and his cinema during the one hundredth anniversary. This museum in the centre of Rome is a largest interdisciplinary exhibition venue, with more than 10,000 square meters of space on three floors, including an auditorium and a cinema. Bergman’s centenary celebrations in Rome starts on 18th January till 4th march was made with the Palaexpo Special Company, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, La Farfalla sul Mirino, and the Swedish Embassy in Italy, Svenska Filminstitutet, Ingmar Bergman Foundation also joined the project.
The real force of Bergman’s cinema, often underestimated, is that of his approach to emotional, vital and empathic cinema, far from the cliché of an intellectual and obscure art and open to games, irony, experimentation and sensuality. To provide his artistic universe, the retrospective also includes a handful of movies by directors to whom loved, including several films whom has repeatedly referred to as his favorites over the course of his career, like Chaplin, Fellini, from Tarkovskij to Murnau, from Sjöström to Dreyer and Antonioni.
They will be the special guests of this extraordinary retrospective for Bergman’s anniversary. So the cinema hall of Palace of Exhibitions will transmit other masterpieces of neo-classical world cinema, almost every day in these two months a free projection is available, while places last from 9.00 pm.
